Overview

What made Hamra the beating heart of Beirut, and how did it become the neighborhood we know today?

Join me for a walk through one of Beirut’s most iconic neighborhoods, where every street holds traces of a different time. Once a center of intellectual life, theatre and political debate, Hamra attracted writers, students, artists and people from across Lebanon and the Arab world. Its cafés, cinemas, bookshops, and lively streets helped shape Beirut’s reputation as the region's cultural capital.

On this walking tour, we’ll discover stories that reveal the neighborhood’s character. We’ll travel back to its golden era, explore how the Lebanese Civil War disrupted its cultural and social life, and look at how political changes, economic crises, and the current situation continue to shape Hamra.

But this isn't just a tour of dates, buildings, and historical events. It’s also about people, memories, and the contrasts that make Beirut what it is. How has Hamra changed? What has disappeared, what has survived, and what keeps the neighborhood alive?

Come with curiosity, bring your questions, and discover Hamra through the stories that connect its past to its present.
