Funchal Free Walking Tour: History, Stories and Zona Velha (Old Town), Funchal is much more than beautiful streets, colourful doors and postcard views. Behind the city we see today are more than 500 years of stories. Sailors and fishermen, devastating floods, political change, local traditions and a neighbourhood that managed to reinvent itself.
On this walking tour, we'll travel through different chapters of Funchal's history before making our way into its historic Zona Velha (Old Town).
Along the way, you'll discover how the city developed from the early days of Madeira's settlement, see Forte de São Tiago, the first fort built to protect Funchal, and hear about some of the natural disasters that shaped the city.
We'll also cover some more recent history, from the arrival of democracy in Portugal to Madeira's autonomy.
And, of course, we have to talk about poncha! We'll share the story behind Madeira's traditional poncha and recommend some of our favourite places to try a good one.
About an hour into our walk, we reach Funchal's Old Town — Zona Velha. Once home to a community of fishermen and seafarers, it was for centuries one of the city's poorest areas and, not so long ago, a place many locals avoided.
So how did it become one of Funchal's liveliest neighbourhoods?
As we explore its narrow streets, you'll discover its remarkable transformation and see how art helped bring new life to the area. Along Rua de Santa Maria, colourful painted doors have turned the street into a unique open-air gallery.
More than a walk between sights, this tour is about the stories, people and events that made Funchal the city it is today.
We finish in Barreirinha, just a five-minute walk away from the Funchal Cable Car.
